Where can i get a stag beetle Dance Costume or a design that i can make myself for a 7 year old?

My daughter is doing a dance show and has been chosen to be a Stag Beetle?? Help. I have no idea were to begin!!

[chuckling] Well I don't think you'll find it at your local costume shop. I can't imagine it being a big seller. "Mom, forget Power Rangers or XMen, THIS Halloween I wanna be a STAG BEETLE!"

So it looks like you'll have to make it. And since its a dance show, she'll probably have to move pretty well in it, which rules out any kind of hard construction shell like papermache or cardboard.

I would suggest using foam rubber and painting it with latex housepaint to give it a shell appearance. Looking at the photo at the link, there are three main segments. The back end would go from your daughter's waist to her ankles. The mid section would go from shoulders to waist. The head and mandibles section would be a kind of hat.

You can go two or three dimensional. Two dimensional would be a flat representation of the beetle's shell that tie around your daughter's shoulders, waist, and head and would probably be the easiest thing to do. But she won't look very beetle-like from the side.

Three dimensions would work better I think. That would be where you would make a tube for the back end (kind of like a flamenco dress trailing to the floor but split up the front to allow movement). The mid section would be sort of box-like, almost like an armored breastplate. And then the mandibles can be attached to a hood of foam or affixed to some base, perhaps a baseball cap without its brim or worn backwards.

I hope they at least gave you some advance warning, and they don't expect you to produce this in two days. Good Luck!
