Halloween Driver & Pedestrian Safety Tips

The chill is in the air. Orange is the dominant color and kids are beginning to think of their plans for October 31st. Before you go out shopping for costumes and buying bags of candy this year, spend a few minutes planning the night ahead.

Identify what type of celebrations will be taking place and where they will be located. Not only will it help determine your plans, it will help you be an aware driver as you travel on the roadways. If you will be attending a party, plan for a designated driver or commit to not drink. Even small amounts of alcohol can impair your judgment and driving. Driving under the influence can kill or cause trauma, be expensive and embarrassing. 

When costume planning, make sure that all costumes fit appropriately and will not restrict movement or visibility, either as a pedestrian or behind the wheel. Ensure foot wear is sturdy. Tripping, falling, difficulty steering or braking can be dangerous!

Add reflective tape to costumes and replace flash light batteries to ensure you will be visible, whether escorting trick or treaters or attending an event yourself. Confirm any children you are with have flashlights, glow stick, bright candy bags, and reflective tape on costumes as well. Clear up any yard obstructions, water hoses, and overgrown vegetation to make it easier to see and maneuver for both pedestrians and vehicles.

Know your planned route, to avoid the unexpected. Plan to travel in well lighted areas. If walking, use sidewalks and crosswalks. If driving, avoid areas of heavy pedestrian traffic and park in areas with the greatest visibility. Design alternate routes that will provide the least amount of risk and the most amount of safety. Arrange to give yourself extra time to and from your destination. 

Halloween is on Saturday this year, so expect the festivities to begin early in the day and prepare to be a defensive driver. If you can, avoid driving on Halloween. 

Be alert for kids playing in costumes during the day, darting from house to house or in between parked cars. Pay special attention beginning at 4:30pm for the younger treat seekers. Turn your head lights on to make your vehicle more visible.  Drivers need to be especially diligent driving during dusk through the night time as visibility is reduced. 

Reduce distractions. Make sure your cell phone is on silent, your radio volume is low and your passengers are aware to minimize distractions and assist with being alert to the surrounding environment.

Be extra cautious as you pull into and leave driveways, parking lots and alleys for children that may dart out between cars, at roadways, medians and on curves. Be sure to check your blind spots thoroughly and maintain a search and scan of the driving environment every three seconds.

Travel well below the posted speed limit. Be extra patient with pedestrians and other vehicles and always be prepared to stop at a given moment. They may be carrying trick or treaters and be distracted. Avoid passing or going around stopped vehicles. They may have passengers entering and exiting hurriedly and carelessly.

Halloween can truly be a fun night full of great memories! Take a few steps to keep it safe and trouble free.

I'm going to an 18th Costume Party, the theme is musical characters?

edit: by 'musical' i mean a play/movie with songs in it...

well it depends on who else is going to be there and what your favorite musicals are. If theres going to be big parental supervision, then you may not want to go as Mimi from RENT. Dress as something from your favorite musical! Also, are everyone else big theatre geeks? if so, you can go as someone totally creative. If everyone just kinda likes it then you may want to go as something that alot of people recongnize, like Dorothy or Elphaba. It also depends if you want to be funny, or maybe just cute. Finally it depends on if your willing to go out and buy anything extra, or just from things you find around the house!

okay, this might be a little too edgy depending on YOUR age, high heels, fish net tights, denim or leather Mini Skirt, tank top with a baggy, oversized cut tee shirt. And big hoops. If your familiar with rent, mimi is a....um....Exotic Dancer for a living
-The Witch from Into the Woods
So, if you know the show, once the witch is transformed, she becomes beautiful again, so cute but kinda fancy tight low cut dress, some sort of wand, Super curled hair, and something glittery in your hair, like a sparkly clip. Its like Glinda, only sexier and more original
-Babette from Disney's Beauty and the Beast (I played her!)
okay, so babette is the French Maid who gets turned into a feather duster. So find a slimky black dress from a thrift shop, and hot glue a wite Feather Boa at the bottom and where ever else you please. You could also take part of the boa and turn it into a hair clip
If you want to be funny
-Billy Elliot from Billy Elliot
Wear a plain white tee shirt and jeans, with converse or vans. Make, buy, or borrow a Tu-tu. finally, make fake "boy hair" by putting your hair in a loose low pony tail and flip it in, so it makes your hair super short.

you dont have to be green, but it would be funny. Wear your hair in a low lose braid down your back and then wear a tiara. dont forget the green dress! Heres the fun part, get you boyfriend pr guy friend to dress up as shrek, donkey or lord farquad (for lord f, he should be on his knees)

dress in head to toe black (like cute v-neck tee and mini skirt with Black Heels). Then all you have to do is make a puppet. You can look up pictures or just go to Michael's and buy a "make your own puppet" thing

Long brown skirt, white tee shirt, thick brown or black belt, brown or black newboy cap. For a little extra, you could smudge "dirt" (brown eyeshadow) on your face and put "blood" (red marker if you dont own stage blood) on your stomach because eponine gets shot, and you could carry a letter in your hand, because shes delivering a message to Cossette. Also, if you happen to have a trench coat, wear it, but leave it open.

wear a long Dress Apron, and chef's hat if you have one. If you know the show, the baker and his wife are on a mission to find "The cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, the slipper as pure as gold" cow (whos name is milky white) i suggest a cow plushie, or if you can get a friend to dress up as a cow and be with you, that would be awesome! for the cape as red as blood, find a little red Riding Hood and ask to borrow the hood from a friend costume or somered fabric will do. For Rapunzel's hair, go to a craft store and pick up some Blonde looking yarn. For the slipper as pure as gold, a high heel, if yous gold, even better. now, hold the cow in one hand, wear the "hair" as a scarf, drape the cape on your arm, and hold the shoe in the other hand!
