Venetian Blind Materials

There is a Venetian blind style to suit every room in a home and workplace. However, some materials are more practical to use in specific rooms - continued.

Kitchens: Kitchens are susceptible to excess moisture and humidity, therefore a Venetian blind made from PVC or aluminium is the most practical type to use. With the wide range of colours available in metal blinds they can be used effectively to compliment or contrast a kitchen's design style. From a safety point of view fabric curtains are not practical for use in a kitchen. As most sink units are placed in front of the kitchen window fabrics can easily be splashed with water causing mildew and unsightly stains. Venetian blinds are very easy to keep clean, another reason for their practicality for use in a kitchen.

Traditional style kitchens which favour pine or oak furniture and fittings look great with a realistic wood effect aluminium blind.

Utility rooms: With similar conditions as a kitchen the most appropriate Venetian blind materials would be PVC or aluminium. As utilities rooms have a tendency to be pretty small classical whites and creams provide a crisp clean look.

Conservatories: Due to the excess heat during the summer in most conservatories keeping temperatures level as low as possible is imperative. Venetian blinds offer a great way to overcome this problem. Wooden blinds which have been specially treated to help reduce them from fading are ideal to create a very natural appearance, bringing nature right inside the room. Fitting an individual blind to each window panel allows for them to be raised or lowered as the sun moves across the sky. This is particularly useful during winter months. During the summer the blinds can be fully closed or tilted to help keep the heat out. Aluminium blinds can also be used in a conservatory, however if fitted to south facing windows they can become surprisingly hot to the touch!

Bedrooms: Venetian blinds made from any material look stunning in a bedroom window. Used as the sole window dressing fitted to either the inside or outside of the window casement Venetian blinds offer a sophisticated and elegant style. When fitted inside the window recess and used in conjunction with curtains beautiful window styles can be effectively achieved.

Pastel coloured aluminium blinds will blend effortlessly and not dominate the room.

For a more modern approach dark coloured Faux Leather blinds can be used to create a look and style which is great for men! Alternatively a black faux leather blind can be used to coordinated with trendy vibrant colours to give a visual impact to the room.

Wooden Venetian blinds offer a timeless look which compliments all types of interior design style. Dark zebra wood is visually pleasing to the eye with its natural stripe effects.

Landings and hallways: These often have small or long narrow windows. Venetian Blinds made from durable materials such as wood or aluminium are the perfect choices.

Made Venetian
Inexpensive way to mask ugly tile?

My new kitchen has ugly beige and flowery tiling all over the walls. I am looking for an inexpensive way to mask these tiles. I have a couple of ideas, but I don't know if any of them will work out. One is to go over the tiles with venetian plaster. Another is to nail tin roof tiles over the walls. Another is to apply a spray paint made for tiles that I found at Sherwin Williams...it just comes in white and just sprays over the tiles. What do you think? Any other suggestions?

You can buy tile paint - this will come in many colours. You can also apply tile transfers but I've found these can discolour and develop tiny vein like cracks after a while (yep, our kitchen has yucky random patterned tiles too!).

I don't think the plaster would be good, if the tiles are glazed the plaster wouldn't have anything to adhere to and would just fall off.

You could get a stainless steel panel cut to size and glue this over the top - do this as one big sheet rather than lots of tiny tiles - easier to clean this way too.

You could paint the tiles a jazzy colour and then fit a sheet of clear perspex over the top.
