Mardi Gras has its roots in Catholicism
Mardi Gras is a Roman Catholic ritual dating back 5,000 years. It is a celebration of the indulgence of foods and beverages that are generally carried out immediately before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the fasting of Lent. The first American Mardi Gras is celebrated around of the modern city of New Orleans on March 3, 1699. It was not until the 1800s that these celebrations involved parades and things of that nature which we recognize today.
Did you know that this special celebration that has its own designated color? That's right. These colors are purple, green and gold. Purple represents justice green is for faith and gold represents power. So if you decide to dress for the occasion, these three colors are the perfect choice. A good set can include a hat jester, mask, disguise, and do not forget to use a variety of pearls around her neck. The more the merrier!
If you can not make the trip to New Orleans to celebrate this year, why not throw your own party? Hang a little green, purple and gold balloons around your house, you may include some serpentina crepe party. Then make sure you have a lot of balls on hand for guests to enjoy. Beads are available in almost any parts store. It is also a good idea to have some masks. You can be creative and make your own or buy, along with their grain. Do not forget the King Cake. This is a tradition Mardi Gras reprsents the three wise men who sought the Christ child shortly after birth. Hide a figure of baby in the cake and let the person who is tradtition carry forward the next year! You may also want to make some rice dishes like jambalaya and Creole and Cajun dishes you enjoy. Finally, be safe and have fun!
